Square built homes with their similarly square gardens cling to a steep black brae. This is not a modern place. Failed projects are dotted around the hill-foots. One house half painted in white before the owner gave up, ran out of money, or simply died. Stripped car bodies lie about, long ago having leaked their last oils into multi-coloured puddles. A section of land that was once fenced off to protect young trees has remained a zoo of hauntingly shrunken and brittle growths. The trees never grew, the weather wouldn’t allow it.
