The Lowther Hills are blue-green, purple-green, and so quiet you can hear tiny burns slipping down the cracks of the mountain. An eerie gloaming drifts down over the patches of heather and dark rock.
This is a hushed, cloaked version of nature. Brittle fences creep alongside the red tracks. The white powder of the dusk is upon me now as I reach the summit.
In the distant glens the firs are tall and threadbare, needle-thin. There was a rumour that a hippy commune had been started in one of these woods back in the sixties. They lived in dark shelters far from the track, some of them up the trees.
My father had once picked up a hitcher who said he was heading up to this 'Lothlorian' with fresh supplies. He’d dropped him at the village I look down upon now, a narrow place strung between the limbs of three hills.
